Health beliefs, treatment preferences and complementary and alternative medicine for asthma, smoking and lung cancer self-management in diverse Black communities

摘要: Abstract Objective The purpose of this literature review is to characterize unconventional health beliefs and complementary alternative medicine (CAM) for asthma, smoking lung cancer as those that are likely safe increase risk in diverse Black communities. These findings should provide the impetus enhanced patient–provider communication elicits patients’ self-management preferences so they may be accommodated, or when necessary, reconciled through discussion partnership. Methods Original research articles relevant topic were obtained by conducting a search PubMed Plus, PsychINFO SCOPUS databases using combinations following terms: cancer, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking, beliefs, medicine, (CAM), explanatory models, African American, Black. Results Using predetermined inclusion exclusion criteria, 51 original papers retained. Taken together, evidence patients hold about origins asthma risks have negative opinions standard medical surgical treatments, favorable attitudes CAM. All but small number CAM behaviors considered safe. Conclusion When not identified discussed, there an increased approaches will sub-optimal, potentially dangerous practices might used timely interventions delayed.
