摘要: The Waigang River, a major tributary of the Qinhuai River system, has suffered from long-standing pollution because lack management. Restoration was commenced in April 2006 to reduce pollutants and improve water quality. Four ecological areas ten surface carriers were constructed for culture plants (mainly hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)) phytoremediation. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), phosphorus, nitrogen (TN), ammonia–nitrogen (NH3–N), transparency, variations phytoplankton population investigated evaluate effects restoration. Over 36 months, TSS, COD, TN, NH3–N levels decreased by 91.1, 55.3, 91.5, 86.5 %, respectively. Transparency increased 25 cm 165 2009. Improvements quality significantly enhanced diversity phytoplankton, which harmed stress. Our results show that cultured can be used restore other heavily polluted rivers with conditions similar those especially initial stages
