摘要: To comprehend speech in most environments, listeners must combine some but not all sounds from across a wide range of frequencies. Three experiments were conducted to examine the role amplitude comodulation performing an essential part this function: grouping together simultaneous components signal. Each used time-varying sinusoidal (TVS) sentences (Remez, Rubin, Pisoni, & Carrell, 1981) as base stimuli because their component tones are acoustically unrelated. The independence three reduced number confounding cues available compared with those found natural or computersynthesized (e.g., fundamental frequency and simultaneity harmonic onset). In each experiments, TVS modulated determine whether modulation would lead appropriate reflected by sentence intelligibility. Experiment 1 demonstrated that at 100 Hz did improve intelligibility sentences. 2 showed be comodulated (as opposed independently modulated) for improvements found. 3 rates led consistent effective examined complex nonspeech common temporal envelopes(e.g., masking release; Hall, Haggard, Fernandes, 1984). results these support claim certain basic temporal-envelope processing capabilities liunian auditory system contribute perception fluent speech.
