Do major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder confer differential risk for suicide

摘要: Background: Although there has been a tremendous amount of research examining the risk conferred for suicide by depression in general, relatively little examines specific forms depressive illness (e.g., dysthymic disorder, single episode versus recurrent major disorder [MDD]). The purpose current study was to examine differences suicidal ideation, clinician-rated risk, attempts, and family history sample outpatients diagnosed with various illness. Methods: To accomplish this aim, we conducted cluster analysis using aforementioned suicide-related variables 494 seen between January 2001 July 2007 at Florida State University Psychology Clinic. Patients were DSM-IV criteria. Results: Two distinct clusters emerged that indicative lower higher suicide. After controlling number comorbid Axis I II diagnoses, only significantly predicted membership MDD, which tripled an individual's likelihood being assigned cluster. Limitations: use cross-sectional design; low our sample; small individuals double depression. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate importance both chronicity severity terms predicting increased risk.
