Essentialism in Children’s Literature: The Emergence of Retrogressive Discourses in post- 9/11 Picture Books.

摘要: Immediately following the 9/11 attacks, a number of picture books for children were published as response to new socio-political context in United States. This article explores how these constitute an essentialist discourse whose themes and perspectives can be considered strategic. As will analyzed, they reveal “natural” positioning that generates degree group identification constructs drastic dichotomies such us versus them, by overlooking internal differences, reasserting values patriotism national identity, fostering emergence jingoistic dynamics bring difference / sameness into play. Such ethnocentric is problematic because it defines Self opposition Other, controversially induces young readers adopt one-sided dogmatic ideology.
