摘要: The bioartificial pancreas (BAP) represents a viable solution for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). By encapsulating pancreatic cells in semipermeable membrane to allow nutrient, insulin and glucose exchange, side effects produced by islets whole organ transplantation-related immunosuppressive therapy can be circumvented. Several factors, mainly related materials properties, capsule morphology biological environment, play key role optimizing BAP systems. is an extremely complex delivery system insulin. Despite considerable efforts, some instances meeting with limited degree success, capable restoring physiological functions without need drugs controlling blood levels especially large animal models few clinical trials, does not exist. state art terms materials, fabrication techniques cell sources, as well current status commercial devices are described this overview from interdisciplinary viewpoint. In addition, challenges creation effective systems highlighted including future perspectives component integration both engineering
