摘要: Citizens are increasingly crowdfunding IoT based participatory sensing technologies that allow them to collect and share data about the environment. These initiatives usually referred as grassroots driven by a vision of widening access tools for political action. In this paper we compare patterns participation user experience over 15 months in two distinct communities using ‘Smart Citizen’, crowdfunded tool. Our studies reveal technology issues lack reliability sensed hindered participation. However, one communities, many these challenges were overcome through orchestrated actions led community champions. We discuss how doesn’t necessarily translate into active provide guidelines on achieve sustained engagement projects: enable distributed orchestration provided local champions, encourage social interactions embed skills learning, facilitate meaningful reward mechanisms among members.
