Did Decentralisation Affect Citizens’ Perception of the European Union? The Impact during the Height of Decentralisation in Europe

摘要: The aim of this paper is to assess the extent which different levels decentralisation across regions European Union (EU) affected citizens’ perceptions about integration over period 1973–2002. uses Eurobarometer Surveys explore by means multinomial logistic regressions whether was an important factor behind varying Europe. Two dimensions decentralization—political and fiscal—are considered in analysis, alongside several compositional contextual effects. results analysis show that fiscal fundamental for support integration, while there limited evidence political played a similar role. Hence, may have given prominence economic benefits more associated with its costs. Taking into account history matters, raises potentially interesting insights design policies aimed at promoting social cohesion.
