摘要: Abstract Ecological studies on the Desert Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotis arsipus) in California, USA are severely lacking. Although does not have any formal protections conservation concern for this subspecies is increasing markedly. We conducted a five-year multi-season dietary study Mojave near city of Barstow, USA, which we collected and analyzed over 1,200 scats. Foxes specialized heteromyid rodents, even when preferred prey declined during drought. Invertebrates were also regularly consumed use type increased rodents decreased. Opportunistic items such as birds, reptiles, Pistachio (Pistacia vera) nuts supplemented diet. conclude that California rodent invertebrate specialists, but they sufficient ecological plasticity to expand their diet response environmental changes, similar other canids. Management strategies should thus include steps maintain healthy populations well variety available food options event declines primary foods. may allow adapt persist despite anthropogenic landscape modifications potential climate change.
