摘要: Summary Over the course of ten years, a consortium stakeholders (the Harbor Consortium) used collaborative approach to identify viable pollution prevention (P2) strategies for specific contaminants, namely mercury, cadmium, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well suspended solids entering New York/New Jersey Harbor. The project, titled “The Watershed Pollution Prevention Industrial Ecology Project,” in very conscious overt way engaged process developing P2 recommendations industrial ecology (IE) tools applied by Consortium include substance flow analysis (SFA), material (MFA), and, limited extent, life cycle (LCA) fate transport (F&T), quantify characterize how contaminants through regional economy once released environment. application these scientific five at such large geographical scale, within context broad inclusive stakeholder process, with goal identifying implementing strategies, led wide range surprising outcomes lessons learned. Undertaking this IE research key institutions table resulted identification implementation many opportunities.
