Evaluation of the environmental impact assessment system in Iran

摘要: Abstract EIA in Iran was formally introduced 1994, but to date little EIA-related research has been undertaken the country. In this paper, authors provide an evaluation of Iranian system, focusing on legislation, administration and process. Data collected basis a literature review, document analysis semi-structured interviews. This involved some translation from Persian into English. Evaluation findings indicate that adopted democratic tools SEA, which considering its political context is encouraging. However, currently system does suffer weaknesses such as inadequate screening scoping, lack alternative consideration, public participation, implementation follow-up. The paper proposes initial recommendations based international experiences sets out direction for future research.
