Sustaining cultural vitality in a globalizing world: the Balinese example

摘要: It is generally accepted that massive tourism and a vibrant indigenous culture are mutually exclusive. Bali has so far proven to be an exception this rule. This article explores hitherto overlooked socio‐economic mechanism behind exception. dual complementary currency system used for centuries by highly decentralized democratic decision‐making organizations. The reasons why such effective in mobilizing popular cultural creativity investigated, systems framework proposed determine the conditions under which model could applicable outside of Bali. then tested with second case study: traditional shell currencies Papua New Guinea. Finally, some potential applications areas world other than cultures portrayed.
