摘要: Distribution data for elusive species are often based on detection of field signs rather than the animal itself. However, identifying can be problematic. We present here results a survey American mink, Neovison vison, in northern highlands Scotland to demonstrate importance verifying sign identification. Three experienced surveyors located scats, which they identified as mink at seven 147 sites surveyed and “possible” scats further 50 sites. Mitochondrial DNA was successfully extracted from 45 75 (60%) collected 31 57 “positive” sites; sequencing amplified fragments showed that none these actually origin. consider implications erroneous potential waste resources misdirection conservation/management actions. discuss methods may useful verify identification, including use analysis, stress verification is crucial ensure rigorous reliable data.
