摘要: Grazing experiments with freshly caught plankton from Narragansett Bay were performed at weekly or biweekly intervals through most of a seasonal cycle. The laboratory rates (obtained under simulated natural conditions) multiplied by the zooplankton concentration in environment and effects grazing on phytoplankton community assessed. was extensive spring early summer; production believed to be high large standing crop Skeletonema costatum persisted. population severely reduced during summer, but did not increase markedly some other factor must have been limiting primary this time. During fall, decreasing light allowed little growth mild kept minimum. This ceased December release pressure winter-spring diatom flowering began. Skeletonema costatum, dominant bay diatom, selectively grazed its longer chains preferentially removed.
