Appropriateness of hospital utilisation in Italy.

摘要: Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the extent inappropriate hospital admission and days stay effect variables on such inappropriateness an adult population in Italy. A review made medical records patients admitted any one following specialities: medicine, surgery, gynaecology or traumatology/orthopaedics at five hospitals located respectively Siena, Frosinone, Rome Catanzaro, who were in-patients during four pre-selected index days. To appropriateness length hospitalisation, a retrospective application using Italian version Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (AEP). total 1299 patient reviewed. 14.2% admissions 37.3% number hospitalisation judged be inappropriate. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that significantly increased with relation to: greater distance from patient's home; ward; planned admissions; over weekend. indicated higher for medicine inappropriately admitted. main reason categorising as problems could treated out-patient basis, and, care, physician overtly cautious management patient. Changing physicians' behaviour organisation activities may effective improving quality efficiency care. Public Health (2000) 114 , 9–14.
