A hepatitis E outbreak caused by a temporary interruption in a municipal water treatment system, Baripada, Orissa, India, 2004

摘要: Summary In January 2004, we investigated a cluster of acute hepatitis in Baripada, Orissa, India. Between and March 538 cases (definition: fever with loss appetite jaundice) were reported (attack rate: 263 per 100 000, 5 deaths, case fatality 0.93%). Forty-seven 48 sera positive for IgM antibodies to E virus. Cases peaked February 2004 decreased rapidly, suggesting common source outbreak. Five neighbourhoods supplied by water supply most affected. Ninety-one percent the 30% unaffected controls drinking from one (odds ratio 31, 95% CI 27–48). The neighbourhood's was pumped directly river had not been treated during 10-day period early (1 month before peak outbreak) because strike at treatment plant. This large outbreak associated untreated raw water. Measures must be place check quality municipal ensure essential services strikes.
