摘要: Baroreceptors are mechanosensitive elements of the peripheral nervous system that maintain cardiovascular homeostasis by coordinating responses to external and internal environmental stressors. While it is well known carotid cardiopulmonary baroreceptors modulate sympathetic vasomotor parasympathetic cardiac neural autonomic drive, avoid excessive fluctuations in vascular tone intravascular volume, there increasing recognition also a wide range non-cardiovascular physiological via projections from nucleus solitary tract regions central system, including spinal cord. These regulate pain perception, sleep, consciousness, cognition. In this article, we summarize physiology baroreceptor pathways activation with an emphasis on mechanisms influencing function, Understanding baroreceptor-mediated effects extra-cardiac activities will further our understanding pathophysiology multiple common clinical conditions, such as chronic pain, disorders consciousness (e.g., abnormalities sleep-wake), cognitive impairment, which may result identification implementation novel treatment modalities. © 2021 American Physiological Society.
