"If you don't believe it, it won't help you": use of bush medicine in treating cancer among Aboriginal people in Western Australia

摘要: Little is known about the use of bush medicine and traditional healing among Aboriginal Australians for their treatment cancer meanings attached to it. A qualitative study that explored Australians' perspectives experiences services in Western Australia provided an opportunity analyse contemporary by people with Data collection occurred Perth, both rural remote areas included individual in-depth interviews, observations field notes. Of thirty-seven interviews patients, family members who died from some health care providers, 11 participants whose responses substantial mention on issue were selected analysis this paper. The findings have shown as part treating cancer. Such processes medicines preferred because it helped reconnect them heritage, land, culture spirits ancestors, bringing peace mind during illness. Spiritual beliefs holistic approaches practices play important role choices patients. Service providers need acknowledge understand existence knowledge (epistemology) accept can be addition person's complementing medical regimes. Allowing supporting reflects a commitment modern adopting Aboriginal-friendly approach not only culturally appropriate but assists cultural security service.
