The uncertain connection: free trade and rural Mexican migration to the United States.

This article argues that it is easy to overestimate the additional emigration from rural Mexico owing NAFTA-related economic restructuring in Mexico. The avail? able evidence suggests four major reasons why Mexican may not increase massively, despite extensive and dis? placement traditional agriculture. First, many dwellers already have diversified their sources of income, making them less dependent on income earned producing agricultural com? modities like corn will be most affected by NAFTA. Second, a free trade zone might induce more U.S. producers expand during 1990s, creating jobs there instead United States. Third, links between internal migration are direct often assumed; even if increases population movements Mexico, this translate into great deal international emigration.
