摘要: Abstract. Small black-and-white shearwaters of the genus Puffinus are distributed globally, and their phylogenetic relationships complex uncertain. In 1963 a small shearwater collected at Midway Atoll in North Pacific Ocean was identified as Little Shearwater (P. assimilis), but several physical features suggest closer alliance with Audubon's lherminieri) its relatives. Biometrics indicate that taxon this specimen represents is smaller than any other known shearwater, analyses it distinct, pair-wise sequence divergence least 3.8% from related taxa. We thus propose new species based on specimen: Bryan's (Puffinus bryani nom. nov.). The breeding nonbreeding ranges unknown, resemblance to Atlantic boydi (of controversial taxonomic status within Puffinus) suggests an affiliation subtropical or tropical waters. apparently rare coul...
