摘要: Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain how the brain tissue reaction single unit recording electrodes influences biocompatibility including progressive changes in spatial distribution of reactive astrocytes, and loss neurons over indwelling period. To examine these hypotheses, biomarkers associated with foreign body response insulated microwires placed rat cerebral cortex was analyzed 2, 4, 12 weeks after implantation using quantitative methods. We observed a stereotypical that similar some aspects previously reported for penetrating planar silicon microelectrode arrays specific differences an overall lower degree cortical reactivity. While we found no evidence gliosis increases time or neuronal is progressive, did find persistent inflammation enhanced BBB permeability at electrode interface extended 3 month period exhibited more animal variability months than 2 4 weeks.
