摘要: Objective: In 2009, the Departments of Psychiatry and Telehealth University KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) initiated a three year project to develop telepsychiatry services in KwaZulu-Natal. This paper describes challenges opportunities this project. Method: was collaborative, situ health service an action research framework adopted. Over years, following needs assessment e-health Readiness Assessment, two cycles were completed. Cycle 1: The preparation, implementation evaluation educational material, technical requirements clinical guidelines support materials. 2: Preparation outreach sessions. Results: Videoconference education sessions beneficial staff without post-qualification psychiatry training. A flexible format for improved knowledge outcomes. Clinical are feasible, but require administration facilitation. With facilitator training, 128Kbps is suitable bandwidth 384Kbps preferred consultation. Conclusion: Telepsychiatry offers tremendous potential facilitate strategies suggested by World Psychiatric Association address treatment gap, save time costs improve access small pool specialist psychiatrists resource constrained environments.
