Identification and evaluation of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (l.) moench) germplasm from Eastern Kenya

摘要: Eastern Province is a major sorghum growing zone in Kenya. There exist different composites, landraces, open pollinated and wild relatives of that are not yet known. The landraces continue to be maintained by cultural preferences traditional practices the farmers. Germplasm collection was done four regions; Mbeere, Makueni, Kitui Mutomo eastern province Kenya which zones. At time information on traits preferred, seed source variety type recorded for each accession. color name region collected were used identify landraces. Forty from farmers region. Mbeere had most available with diverse colorations clear indication possibility complex this particular compared Kitui, Makueni. unique their adaptation, food quality, grain yield, quality harvested products, biotic stress resistance post-harvest processing. These untapped resources could useful crop improvement programmes security. The decline use may erode genetic base prevent distinctive adaptation improvement.   Key words: Crop improvement, diversity, security, germplasm,
