When urban taps run dry: Sachet water consumption and health effects in low income neighborhoods of Accra, Ghana

摘要: Intraurban differentials in safe drinking water developing cities have been exacerbated by rapid population growth that exceeds expansion of local infrastructure. In Accra, Ghana, municipal is rationed to meet demand, and the gap services increasingly being filled private vendors selling packaged "sachet" water. Sachets extend coverage deeper into low-income areas alleviate need for storage, potentially introducing a health benefit over stored tap We explore correlates using sachets as primary source 2093 women 37 census classified slums UN-Habitat, links between sachet reported diarrhea episodes subset 810 children under five. find neighborhood rationing exerts strong effect on household's likelihood buying water, customers tend be poorest poor. Sachet use also associated with higher levels self-reported overall women, lower children. conclude implications regulation Accra other sub-Saharan facing shortages.
