摘要: Abstract Apparent consumption has been widely used as a metric to estimate material demand. However, with technology advancement and complexity of use, this become less useful in tracking flows, estimating recycling feedstocks, conducting life cycle assessment critical materials. We call for future research efforts focus on building multi-tiered database the global trade network This approach will help track how raw materials are processed into major components (e.g., motor assemblies) eventually incorporated complete pieces equipment wind turbines). Foreseeable challenges would involve: 1) difficulty obtaining comprehensive picture partners due business sensitive information, 2) going machine, 3) maintaining such database. propose ways address these making use digital design, learning from experience similar databases, developing strategy financial sustainability. recommend that, information technology, small steps toward contribute significantly our understanding flows society associated human impacts environment.
