摘要: An O2-barrier in the intact light-harvesting complex LHC II protects chlorophylls (Chl) and xanthophylls (Car) from photooxidation. Direct evidence for limited access of O2 to pigment sites comes decay kinetics first excited triplet state Car (3Car-). The LHC-bound 3Car- air-saturated solution decays mono-exponentially with a lifetime 6.7-7.1 µs as compared approx. 1.2 β-carotene hexane 8.8-9 observed both systems under anaerobiosis. Further properties photostable are protons efficient energy transfer 1Car- Chl-a 3Chl- Car. Fatty acids increasing chain length increasingly lower both, efficiency barrier photo- acid stability pigments while singlet between is maintained. Therefore, close proximity Chl not sufficient protect photooxidation; addition, an limiting required photoprotection. Structural possibly underlying its function discussed.
