Accuracy of recording of deaths from asthma in the UK: the false negative rate.

摘要: BACKGROUND: A study was carried out to determine the extent which asthma deaths are wrongly attributed another cause on UK death certificates. METHODS: Deaths from all causes occurring anywhere in were identified amongst 2382 subjects aged 16-64 years within three of discharge following hospital treatment for (ICD9 493) hospitals South East Thames region. The reviewed by an expert panel assess proportion certificate (false negatives). RESULTS: Eighty five a mean follow up period two and months. In 61 cases (72%) there sufficient information be confident about death. 22 asthma, four certified as non-asthma (two chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cardiovascular disease). false negative certificates (18%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5 40). CONCLUSIONS: There is evidence that both diseases system.
