Eyes Are Windows to the Chinese Soul: Evidence from the Detection of Real and Fake Smiles

摘要: How do people interpret the meaning of a smile? Previous studies with Westerners have found that both eyes and mouth are crucial in identifying interpreting smiles, yet less is known about Easterners. Here we reported when asking Chinese to judge Duchenne non-Duchenne smiles as either real or fake, their accuracy sensitivity were negatively correlated individualism scores but positively collectivism scores. However, such correlations only for participants who stated be most useful references, not those favored mouth. Moreover, more accurate sensitive than Our results thus indicate follow typical Eastern decoding process using diagnostic cues identify others' facial expressions social intentions, particularly sensitive, they self-report greater collectivistic lower individualistic values.
