Television situation comedies : Female body images and verbal reinforcements

摘要: A content analysis of 28 different prime-timetelevision situation comedies examined the body weightsof 52 central female characters (88% White, 10% Black,2% Asian), verbal comments they received from other as a function bodyweight, and their self-comments with respect to theirown weight, shape dieting behaviors. Comparedwith general population, below average were over-represented insituation comedies; above weight wereunder-represented. Below femalecharacters significantly more positive male regards tobody than heavier counterparts.Dieting gave themselves significantlymore punishment for those less involved in dieting.This combination modeling thin ideal theverbal reinforcement associated this modelinglikely contributes internalization may put some young viewers atrisk developing eating disorders.
