摘要: In the field of history we are currently observing a ‘memory wave’. A key feature growing bulk publications on memory is that they revolve around relationship to past in past. This meta-historical approach implies study both scholarly and non-scholarly production, distribution reception historical representations. This article discusses some influential notions: collective memories, emblems, icons appropriation. Memory participants sometimes integrate use received meanings values their own culture, might disturb larger mnemonic community which also belong. To clarify my argument I furthermore analyse ‘Volendams meisje’, famous female Dutch icon. course nineteenth twentieth century original emblem for Netherlands – heroic Virgin Liberty was replaced by this young girl traditional costume. Since 1870s images rural life were gradually used construct national identity, myth unity, based cultural ethnic criteria. After 1900 particularly several ‘peasant girls’ figured advertisements attract buyers. Interestingly enough, suffragettes from bourgeois classes playfully appropriated costume purposes. Obviously type acting evoked nostalgic memories good old days. At same time reassuring image emphasized ‘whiteness’ femininity feminists.
