摘要: Autism is a highly stigmatized developmental disability in many societies, and the media are major contributors to such stigma. Presented here first systematic analysis of Chinese newspapers' coverage autism for stigma-causing content. More specifically, this examines age autistic people reported, image people, use stigma cues (in terms peril, mark, shame) challenge personification, hope, fight) five leading newspapers China between 2003 2012. It finds that while reportage increases over time, which might contribute public's heightened awareness condition, often biased. The most common stereotypes about as children, patients, or savants. often-used personification but their uses significantly decrease percentage from used peril mark. shame cue relatively less frequent, it 10-year period. Theoretically, article provides an application communication theory non-Western context. Practically, not only contributes current knowledge representation China, also suggests important agencies health care professionals promote guidelines train journalists reporting issues nonstigmatizing way.
