Collection of spawning-condition eels of Ariosoma meeki in the Kuroshio Current in the East China Sea

摘要: When and where marine eels spawn is poorly known even though species such as those of the family Congridae, Muraenidae Ophichthidae can be caught in continental shelf habitats. The congrid genus Ariosoma includes small eel whose life histories are not yet known. Mature male female meeki were observed captured on 17 August 2009 at surface night western side Kuroshio Current East China Sea close to new moon, while they swimming slowly exhibiting apparent reproduction-related behaviour. One one sex-unidentified (seemingly a based body shape) chasing larger with their heads located near her urogenital pore area. gonads (540 mm) (410 that by long-handled dip net reproductive condition, because some eggs or seminal fluid released during handling two specimens high gonad-somatic index (GSI) values 53 20 recorded. This few cases which fully ripe reproductive-condition have been collected it provides rare information about spawning location timing this species.
