The layered structure in exchange flows between two basins (Middle and Southern basins of the Caspian Sea)

摘要: Ocean waters often show layered structures especially where exchange flow between two basins occurs. These are attributed to processes such as double-diffusive convection, internal waves, turbulent modulated mixing. In this paper by examining the vertical of temperature, salinity and density, middle parts Caspian Sea it is shown that structure may be due normal modes waves double diffusive convection (the density ratio negative) does not occur in these waters. Contours isotherm, isohaline isopycnal existence rather regular wavy structures, which indicate produced exchange, basins; a result horizontal gradients (usually from basin southern basin) generate layers. The velocity associated with gravity driven about 0.1 0.15 m/s gives Froude number one. wave lengths 200 km hence, frequencies them order inertial frequency at latitudes. appear have near steady can fold inflow front Northern part Southern deep basin. thickness formed layers found 10-20 m agreement values predicted model Wong et al.
