摘要: The swimbladder-acoustico-lateralis system of the Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, is described and compared with that herring, Clupea harengus. develops in larva at a much earlier stage than being functional by about 2 mm tl. volume gas-filled pro-otic bullae five times gas ducts to swimbladder, instead short separate, are three length join form common duct well front swimbladder. menhaden swimbladder baggy totally compliant when subjected pressure changes. There no toughened anterior end as but steeply angled body cavity, causing collect after increase, unless fish diving very steeply. guanine content comparable herring makes wall impervious diffusion. When quick increases decreases, membrane returns its flat position time constant 31-44 s. Very large changes 3 atm burst adult not larvae.
