Generic security concern influencing individual response to natural hazards: evidence from Shanghai, China

摘要: Shanghai is a megacity located in hazard-prone region, but one which local residents have not actively engaged disaster risk management. This paper aims to identify factors of perception that influence residents' propensity adopt risk-mitigating measures. It presents results structured questionnaire survey administered residents. Results show measures are deemed be important if people: (1) frequently experienced extreme weather; (2) believe weather events severe Shanghai; and (3) concerned about other public risks confronting international society, such as energy security terrorism. note the third point has resulted greater impacts than two factors. A cultural explanation offered this paper. Public awareness emanates from generic concern over human world. acts socio-cultural backdrop contextualises ways individuals respond natural hazards. The significance factor indicates need for broadening analytical scope research China. These findings useful policymakers, emergency managers community aid organisations seeking develop creative strategies education communication.
