Despite a general recognition that treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has become large-scale undertaking, the size treated population and associated costs are not well quantified. This report combines data available from variety sources places current (midyear 2001) estimated global maintenance dialysis at just over 1.1 million patients. Assuming figure reasonable average, annual worldwide ESRD 2001, excluding transplantation, will be between $70 $75 billion US dollars.
