摘要: Abstract The 11 genebanks of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture (CGIAR) have grown considerably in size over past few decades, currently holding about 666,000 accessions germplasm. Conserving germplasm is a very long run, if not perpetuity, proposition. mismatch between mainly annual funding support for this conservation effort and its long-term nature intent serious concern. Using results five CGIAR genebank case studies (accounting 87% total holdings), we estimate an endowment or trust fund that would be required to assure stream conserve genetic material future generations. cost (in year 2000 US$) conserving distributing presently held all estimated 5.7 million US$ (mUS$), which could maintained generations by setting aside 149 mUS$ (invested at real rate interest 4% per annum). This sufficient underwrite costs CGIAR’s current activities perpetuity (estimated 61 mUS$), as well maintaining distribution (88 mUS$) provide breeders, scientists, farmers others world wide.
