摘要: SUMMARY 1. Over the past 65 my, Australian continent experienced a pronounced shift from predominantly wet, tropical, conditions to much drier climate. Little is known, however, about effect of this important continent-wide event on freshwater organisms and ecosystems. Fairy shrimps (Crustacea; Anostraca) are ancient specialist inhabitants temporary saline aquatic habitats that typically prevail under semiarid conditions. Therefore, they present suitable evolutionary models study scenarios historic environmental change impact drying climate ecosystems in particular. 2. Focussing both macro- micro-evolution fairy shrimp genus Branchinella using mitochondrial DNA data (16S COI), we evaluated whether patterns contemporary genetic variation reflect change. 3. There close match between episodes Cenozoic macro-evolutionary diversification shrimps, presumably mediated by progressive increase abundance diversity continent. Micro-evolutionary range expansion recent contraction, linked extreme events during Pleistocene glacial periods. 4. This effectively illustrates potential long-term effects trajectories fauna waters. Moreover, it demonstrates importance adaptation new environments non-adaptive processes, such as divergence isolation, for explaining extant particular environment.
