Side and time variability of intraepidermal nerve fiber density

摘要: Objective: To assess the right-to-left and short-term variability of intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) at distal site leg. Methods: Patients with possible or probable small neuropathy (SFN) healthy volunteers (HVs) underwent skin biopsies right left A subgroup participants follow-up 20 days later. Biopsies were immunostained by polyclonal anti-protein gene product 9.5 antibodies, IENFD was quantified in nonconsecutive sections following published guidelines operators blinded to participants9 condition (diagnosis, side, time biopsy). Findings referred sex- age-adjusted normative values. Results: Forty patients 17 HVs bilateral biopsies; 15 8 biopsies. Sural dorsal sural conduction studies normal all participants. The correlation coefficients excellent (Pearson 0.95 SFN 0.97 HVs). analysis 20-day biopsy showed no difference between sides groups yielded coefficients. Conclusions: diagnosis can be reliably ascertained unilateral leg, is expected vary within 3 weeks.
