Migration, sociocultural factors, and local cultural worlds among Fuzhounese Chinese immigrants: Implications for mental health interventions

摘要: The last two decades have seen a rapid increase of Fuzhounese immigrants (from Fujian Province, China) to the U.S. This group spurred interest researchers because their new immigrant status and demographic sociocultural background that places them at significant disadvantage compared with majority already-established Chinese immigrants. paper synthesizes existing research on Fuzhounese's historical/cultural migration experiences examines ways in which socio-cultural forces interact post-migration stressors impact onset, manifestation, diagnosis, treatment symptoms this group. From prior ethnographic work, we suggest pursuit four core social goals plays key role interfering psychiatric adherence: 1) To pay off smuggling debt (often >$80,000); 2) send money natal families improve standing; 3) save for dowry perpetuate familial lineage by marrying producing offspring; 4) attain legal status. offer more insight how these motivations disability, present case vignette man diagnosed schizophrenia. We relate his issues specific fundamental values infuse both lived experience mental illness inform clinical community strategies also extend relevant recommendations migratory workers from other ethnic groups.
