摘要: The observation of comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) with XMM-Newton is a highlight in the field cometary research. During 17 hours almost uninterrupted observations, more than one million photons were recorded unprecedented spectral resolution. results obtained so far clearly demonstrate that X-ray emission caused by charge exchange reactions between highly charged heavy ions in the solar wind - mainly oxygen and carbon gas. Due to high number detected photons, an investigation morphology also possible considerable detail. was a highlight from technological point view, demonstrating has capabilities are currently utilized. In order follow comet, orientation satellite had be adjusted several times. This done just changing guide star offsets, leaving instruments switched on. Compared usual procedure regular slews, where are reinitialized afterwards, this new technique increased time available for scientific observations 34% MOS 83% PN. capability performing quick attitude adjustments during may interest other astrophysical applications.
