Making resettlement work : The case of India's Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

摘要: Abstract The relocation and resettlement of people from nature reserves is a controversial issue in the conservation community. perceived poor success rate efforts, combined with availability few well-documented studies, warrants detailed examination this issue. I have analyzed project India’s Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. examine experience 419 households who moved to two villages located outside reserve. interviewed 61% relocated 2002 55% 2006. In 2002, 71% were satisfied effort their quality life. 2006, 52% Four years after relocation, all access electricity, water, schools, health care, transportation, communication facilities. Many increased income assets. Yet, there differences between different-resettlement villages, one them faring better terms economics, hardships, uncertainty. This paper draws out insights important for improving practices related efforts. It documents short mid-term successes challenges that affect communities involved. submit specific contexts, may be viable tool. Successful requires substantial financial support meet people’s socio-economic needs, active consultation involved, partnerships committed non-governmental governmental organizations.
