摘要: Introduction Although roll-your-own (RYO) loose tobacco is increasingly popular among smokers, no jurisdictions have used RYO-specific pictorial warning labels (PWL) on packaging. We explored how New Zealand RYO a population with over 10 years of exposure to PWLs, reacted warnings featuring novel themes. Methods conducted an online survey 785 smokers in March 2019. Eligible participants were aged 18-70 who smoked predominantly cigarettes. Participants randomly viewed two eight PWLs themes health information (mouth and throat cancer), suffering (male female), toxins, material hardship, cost, family transmission smoking harm pets answered items assessing negative emotions perceived effectiveness. Results Compared reference PWL (most similar content tone Zealand's existing PWLs), only male elicited both significantly stronger emotion higher No performed worse than the PWL, suggesting any could be at least as effective smokers. The individual-level factors consistently associated effectiveness age, desire quit smoking, believing quitting reduce risk serious disease, attempt within previous 6 months ever-planning quit. Conclusion Our findings suggest that, context, emphasising useful starting point for compared general warnings.
