摘要: McMurdo Station is the largest research station in Antarctica and has a population that ranges from 250 to 1200 people. Wastewater macerated, was sometimes mixed with waste brine desalinization plant discharged Sound. Effluent water quality been routinely monitored since 1989, special ambient study conducted by Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) personnel 1992. Results of effluent monitoring efforts show low concentrations few organic contaminants have detected, while metals, particularly copper, are considerably higher. Ambient sea ice detected very contaminants, all at levels. Only minor variable dissolved oxygen depression near outfall. Diatom communities outfall differ relative abundance, cell counts, chlorophyll content compared control sites. For purpose evaluating impact McMurdo`s on quality, improved sediment recommended instead frequent quality.
