摘要: End states—the zero-dimensional analogs of the two-dimensional states that occur at a crystal surface—were observed ends one-dimensional atom chains were self-assembled by depositing gold on vicinal Si(553) surface. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements differential conductance along revealed quantized in isolated segments with differentiated forming over end atoms. A comparison to tight-binding model demonstrated how formation electronic transforms density and energy levels within chains.
