摘要: Since the 1970s, market‐based economic policies have been institutionalized as a nearly global policy paradigm. Using four national case studies, this article shows that and financial globalization played critical role in fostering transition to neoliberal policies, but local institutional conditions were decisive shaping nature meaning of shift. While analysis finds developing countries appear more dependent upon direct external pressures than developed ones, it also patterns state‐society relations determined way which transitions carried out, somewhat irrespectively level development. In Chile Britain, poorly mediated distributional conflict created ideological for “monetarist” revolution. Mexico France, on other hand, neoliberalism was understood mainly necessary step adapt country international economy.
