摘要: Abstract Many effects in the interaction between atoms and a cavity that are usually described quantum mechanical terms (cavity electrodynamics, QED) can be understood quantitatively analyzed within classical framework. We adopt such picture of radiating dipole oscillator to derive explicit expressions for coupling single atomic ensembles Gaussian modes free space an optical resonator. The cooperativity parameter QED is shown play central role given geometrical interpretation. analysis yields transparent, intuitive results useful analyzing applications as atom detection counting, cooling, spin squeezing, optomechanics, or phase transitions associated with self-organization ensemble-light system.
