摘要: Four studies investigated how general mental imagery might be involved in mediating the phenomenon of 'synaesthetic' spatial forms - i.e., experience that sequences such as months or numbers have locations. In Study 1, people with scored higher than controls on visual self-report scales. This is consistent suggestion strong at least a necessary condition to forms. However self-reported did not differ between groups, suggesting either nature mediated by special synaesthetic mechanisms, are depictive images rather explicit models. A methodological implication 1 was tendency for use strategies account some their previously-reported behavioural differences control groups. concern supported Studies 2-4. Normal participants were encouraged visually image various layouts, and associations tested using left/right key presses classify month names belonging first second half year (Studies 2-3) odd/even (Study 4). Reaction times showed month-SNARC (Spatial Numerical Association Response Codes) effects similar magnitude data from form (Price Mentzoni, 2008). Additionally, reversing within instructed sufficient reverse direction observed (i.e., positive vs negative slope), just different previously shown modulate (ibid.). Results challenge whether groups need explained terms mechanisms intentional strategies. It argued usually processes should complement possible explanations
