Planning to move into a nursing home in old age: does sexual orientation matter?

摘要: Background Qualitative studies showed that community-dwelling Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals perceive LGBT are discriminated against in nursing homes (NHs) due to their sexual orientation. Therefore, the objective of this quantitative, population-based study was investigate link between orientation planning move into a NH oldage. Methods Cross-sectional data from most recent sixth wave nationally representative German Ageing Survey (n = 4,645) were used. The dichotomized (heterosexual; minorities including gay/lesbian, bisexual other). Planning future (yes/no) our outcome measure. Multiple logistic regressions performed (adjusting for various socioeconomic, psychosocial health-related covariates). Results Regressions not significantly associated with plans NH. Preference consistently positively age (OR: 1.04 (1.02-1.07), having at least one child 2.17 (1.41-3.36)), high education 3.82 (1.32-11.11)), greater loneliness 1.44 (1.05-1.96)) worse physical functioning 0.99 (0.98-1.00)). Conclusions Unexpectedly, results did differ heterosexual minorities. This indicates does play significant role shaping preferences around moving 'in general'. In contrast, other factors like age, important. Those should be taken account when updating policies on homes.
