Farmers’ decision to participate in government agricultural programmes in a volatile political environment: a case study of farmers in the South-South region of Nigeria

摘要: Most g overnment agricultural programmes in developing countries are designed following the political ideology of ruling class and farmers have mixed responses regarding participation . The top – bottom approach adopted designing these further created dissatisfaction among farmers. Achieving objectives will depend on level farmers’ Premised this, study determined factors that influence government programme s Southern region Nigeria. Data were collected from 3 9 0 area. Combinations sampling methods used to collect data Logit model estimates revealed , household size, dependent ratio, farming experience, years social organization, land ownership, awareness index, membership party, non - farm income, visit by extension agent, male composition population formal education positive determin ants On contrary, income bureaucracy bottleneck involved p rogrammes negative determinants. Perceived constraints w ere; b ureaucracy involve; insufficient for implementation, high transport cost low In order increase based region, it is recommended that, should reclaim marginal create a policy ownership resource poor region. Farmers be encouraged form groups. Massive campaign mounted sensitize Also, such olitical ly neutral design up approach.
